Saving Money in the Kitchen
In today’s economy, prices are going up on everything and it is difficult to stretch out our hard earned dollars to cover all the costs of maintaining our lifestyles. People think that because of this it is impossible to save anymore. But, that’s not true. If a person makes up his or her mind to put money away, it can be done. You really can save money today for a new home, a child’s college education, a dream vacation, retirement, or anything else you want. The secret is to set up a savings plan as a number one priority, and then work on goals to make it happen.
Just believe that it can be done and that every penny counts. By having this attitude you will put forth the effort to cut expenses and put away small amounts of money on a regular basis.
As you know, food costs are going sky-high and it seems impossible to feed your family within your budget. So, let’s look at a few ways of saving money in the kitchen.
- You should try to buy only fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season. Out of season produce is going to cost more and won’t be as nutritional because they have been picked before they are ripe. Also, chances are they have been imported from other countries and have been in transit for weeks. Buy in season fruits and vegetables from local farmer’s markets or from stands along the roads in farming belts surrounding your town or city. You will certainly save money and the produce will be more nutritious.
- Milk and dairy products have become more expensive. Often times you can find a local dairy that is set up at a farmer’s market selling their products at a cheaper price.
- If you do buy your produce at a grocery store, watch for the sales. Again, buy in season, and try to determine whether or not the grocery store is buying from local producers. This means lower prices and fresher produce.
- Don’t buy the most expensive cuts of meats. Take your time shopping and comparing. You can buy a little cheaper cut like pork shoulders and chuck roasts. Or, buy the bigger family packs of meat. Divide it into smaller packages and freeze for later use.
- Does your family drink a lot of soda pop? This is an expense that can definitely be done away with. It has been proven to be unhealthy – both regular and diet soda, and we simply drink way too much. Buy more fruit juices or make your own from the fresh fruit you buy. Drink more water. It’s certainly healthier and much less expensive.
