The importance of securing a stable financial future is a great responsibility for parents especially. Having children and saving money can be a great challenge.
Saving and budgeting money are necessary principles that children must learn from parents. These are things that are seldom taught in schools. So, you need to set up priorities and formulate a budget as a family by including your children. Following are money saving tips for parents. See which ones could work best for your family.
Budgeting
The first thing to do is actually set up a budget that is proper and realistic. Once you write down incoming funds against your outgoing expenses, you can then start to see what amount of money you’ll be able to set aside for savings. Set it up on a spreadsheet by categories such as groceries, utilities, entertainment, etc. Once this is done, as a family you will be able to make the decisions as to what the priorities are. It is important to figure out a way of taking care of your debts first. Try to get rid of them by making extra payments when you can. It is difficult to save if you have a lot of unnecessary bills.
Children and saving money
If your children are old enough, you should make them a part of decision making on financial matters. They can be taught how to budget and why it is important to save money. It really helps to give them a weekly allowance so they can learn to budget and save on their own. You can also take your children with you to the grocery store. Show them how to make a shopping list, calculate savings, do price comparisons on products, make the proper use of coupons, etc.
Housing and transportation costs
Look around the home for ways to add money to your savings program. Electric usage is one area that can always be lowered to save money. Get children involved in this by having them turn off lights, tvs, radios, etc. when they leave the room. High gasoline costs are a big drain on the budget. Think about trading your bigger car in for a smaller more economical one. Try to combine trips. If you have to go to the post office, stop at the grocery store on the way home. How about sharing driving cost by starting a car pool, or take a bus to work. Taking public transportation is certainly cheaper than taking your car. Just leave a little bit earlier and take a book with you to catch up on your reading.
Children
Do you have a baby? You can certainly save money by not buying special, expensive baby foods. Learn to make your own. It would surely be a lot more nutritious for your young one. You can involve older children in discovering mouth watering treats that can be made rather than buying expensive, unhealthy snack food for them. Help your kids learn how to take care of their things such as toys and books. When they outgrow things, sell them at a yard sale and let the children keep the money as a reward for taking care of their stuff.
These are just a few money saving tips for parents. Get your children involved in coming up with additional ways. Make sure that they have a clear understanding on how important it is to save because it definitely will affect their future.
