How to Save For Home Improvements

Many types of regular improvements needed around the home can cost a lot of money and we often want to do it all.  The problem is that there is not enough money in our budget to support this kind of thinking.  Often we have to sacrifice quality or details to get it all done.  How to save for home improvements can be a problem.

Following is a list of ideas that will help you put money into your budget set up for remodeling.

First of all, good water is necessary for good health.  If you are one of the many people that buy and drink bottled water, you know that over time it can be quite expensive.  Think about installing a water filtering system that will provide you with all the purified water that you need at a much lower cost per gallon than bottled water.  You will also help the environment by not adding to the plastic bottle throw away problem and you will also save money that could be set aside for remodeling projects.

Set up your air conditioning in the summer and your heating in the winter to cover the areas of your home that are occupied on a regular basis.  No sense in cooling or heating rooms that are seldom in use.  Just adjust the temperature controls in those areas at a higher or lower setting depending on the time of the year.  You may have to check with a HVAC expert on the requirement of the zoning type required in your home and after that you can see lower costs on your energy billing.

You can also save money on your energy bill by installing a programmable thermostat.  This will run at preset temperatures when you are not at home saving you money to add to your remodeling fund.  Another energy saving idea is investing in a tank-less water heater.  Hot water on demand instead of storing it in a tank at a constant hot temperature that just drains the dollars away.

There is money to be saved outside the home also.  Take a look at your lawn and consider making it 100% organic. I know that this could be a big project in itself, but in the end the effort is well worth it.  Money will be saved on chemical applications two or three times a year and it certainly will contribute to a healthier environment for your children and pets.  Have you heard of xeriscaping?  This is a way of using rocks, colored stones or gravel and plants that do well with little watering.  In fact, drip hoses can be easily covered over with the stones or gravel with drips going to each plant.  By doing xeriscaping you will certainly save money on your water bill as well as gardening maintenance.

If a room needs new flooring, think about considering vinyl rather than ceramic or slate tile.  Vinyl flooring is a lot less expensive than natural materials and can look rather realistic.  Sometime you have to actually bend down and touch it to make sure that it is not the expensive tile.  It is easy to maintain and clean and will save you a lot of money.
